How many dogs have you found homes for now through this program/video series?
•
u/kittytime 7h ago
I think this was 37 or 38!
•
•
•
•
u/LongshoremanX 6h ago
37? Try not to adopt any dogs on your way through the parking lot.

What is the program you use to help these dogs? I get you are in new york city. But maybe my city has something like this.

Straight outta adoption is a doggie that'll smother your mother and make your sister think I love her.

I feel like every time you post these videos, someone sees it and adopts the pup. You gotta have a nearly 100% hit rate
You're saving lives dude. You're an amazing person!!!

smart move, walking dogs around the city prob gets way more eyes on em than sitting in a kennel all day.
•
u/blondebuilder 6h ago
Seriously. Would be awesome to bring more kennel animals to markets, fairs, and other public events. Feel like that would spike adoptions.
•
u/AchingVilla 6h ago
some shelters actually do that now, ive seen pop-ups in brooklyn where they bring dogs out on weekends and the adoption rate jumps noticeably just from ppl interacting with them in person instead of scrolling pics online
•
u/HI-McDunnough 6h ago
Just two weeks ago our local municipal shelter did this. I want to say it was at the staging area for the annual city marathon. Anyway one of the shelter dogs killed another dog whose owner was just walking them around the park. It's a whole big local scandal now.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but they didn't take any sort of precautions so it ended in tragedy.
•
u/blondebuilder 6h ago
That's very tragic. Maybe there's a safer way to do it, like only bring the ultra tame dogs who are human/pet friendly, then promote the others on a big TV slideshow. Maybe make it easy to schedule a visit.
•
u/HI-McDunnough 6h ago
They are talking about overhauling the staff and management there now because it was a dog they had only taken in a few days before and didn't properly check it out to see how reactive he was, etc, and then immediately put him in a high stress environment with ten thousand people walking around.
So yes, someone made a lot of bad decisions for that event.*edit: The CEO has now resigned.

u/Glait 5h ago
Oh wow yeah that is crazy inappropriate to bring a new intake to an adoption event. They are very stressful events for stable outgoing dogs. The dog probably shouldn't't have even been up for adoption yet at the shelter, usually we would give dogs a few days to settle in before evaluating them and also they would need to be evaluated by a vet. Such a sad situation, can't imagine how traumatic it was for everyone involved.

I’m so sorry. Even the best intentions can end in tragedy if people don’t think ahead and prepare properly.

I used to work at a farm house brewery with a ton of space. We hosted the local animal shelters to bring all the pups out for an adopt-a-thon every couple weeks. Ppl loved it, dogs loved it, plenty got adopted, and if nothing else they got to run around a farm for a while.

A few answers to some questions I've been seeing:
- Yes I am Maxine's Dad
- I carry dogs in a backpack because dogs are required to be in a carrier to ride the MTA and carrying a dog in a backpack is super fun for everyone and helps the videos go viral.
- Yes the dogs get to sniff and romp around in the park. They don't spend the entire adventure in the backpack.
- The whole goal is for these videos to reach the widest audience possible in the hopes of spurring adoption applications and finding that dog a forever family.
- I've gotten about 37 dogs adopted this way, and have an almost 100% success rate.
- You can do this at a lot of shelters around the country. The shelter I do this at is Best Friends in New York City. They have a program called Adventure Buddies where you can go and take a dog out for a stroll or adventure around the city and then bring them back.
- Yes I let dogs lick my face and no I don't care about germs.

Also this is super important and wanted to address all the people saying it's terrible to bring the dog back and get their hopes up:
Taking shelter dogs out for daily adventures is incredibly beneficial to their mental well-being. Shelter dogs are under chronic stress from social isolation, and even a single jaunt outside the kennel significantly reduces their cortisol levels.
A peer-reviewed study across 51 shelters and nearly 28,000 dogs found that brief outings of just a few hours made dogs five times more likely to be adopted, while overnight stays increased that likelihood by over 14 times. And those adoptions usually weren't even by the people doing the outings! The dogs were just out in the world, being seen in a neighborhood or showing up on a social media feed, and that visibility made all the difference.
Here’s the link to that study: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10668817/
And also yes it's very difficult for me to form such a close bond with these dogs and then bring them back. Regardless, these adventures are the best part of my week. Knowing that these videos help them find their forever families makes it all worth it.
•
u/Jorgeah93 6h ago
I used to walk shelter dogs a lot when I was younger, and you can tell it means the world for them to be out for those hours, and it boosted the adoptions a lot for the dogs.
•
u/Maleficent_Thanks_51 5h ago
I used to walk shelter dogs too! If you can teach them 1 trick ("sit" is a super easy trick to teach) and give them some relief so they are potty trained, they are SO much more adoptable. Most of the dogs I walked were pitties, and they are the best. Smart, affectionate, wanting to please.

Almost 100%? How do we fix this? I am European :(
→ More replies (1)•
u/GalumphingWithGlee 6h ago
I don't think this can be fixed, on a fundamental level. It can be fixed for any individual animal, and visibility is one of the most important things, but there will always be animals that need homes.
IMO, the best thing you can do is make sure all your pets, and those in your local shelter, local strays, and anywhere else you have influence, get spayed or neutered. It's far easier to reduce the number of homeless pets by preventing a pregnancy than by getting all those animals adopted. And there will still be no shortage of animals to adopt.

Hey mods why did this video get removed???
→ More replies (1)•
u/sadolddrunk 1h ago
I am not a mod of r/aww, but glancing at the rules this type of content might rub up against Rule 7 (no asking for adoption). Although any mod who would make that ruling would have to be an absolute wienermobile. Maybe you should message them and get clarification going forward (don't tell them I called them wienermobiles).

That place has some dogs they allow you to take out on adventures around the city for a day. Willy used to be a part of that and that’s how I got to meet him

It's not a job, but you can volunteer to foster dogs or volunteer at shelters. They can usually use the help and you get to pet all the animals.

Have you posted somewhere about the process, the way dogs react to the carrier, the duration, potty/walk breaks?
I’m curious how the dogs react with the time in the odd position. Different breeds, sizes, etc?
(Not throwing shade. I wonder how much learning there’s been and how your system has evolved over the time you’re doing this.)

Literally my favorite IG channel! Love seeing this so much! Can't really pick a favorite part, they are all really great, the pup cups getting messy is pretty funny though. I also really love seeing them choose toys or chews.

The pup cup is always my favorite part.
You are truly one of the best humans out there. I wish there were more people with half as much empathy as you have. The world would be a spectacular place for all creatures.
