Basketball Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a free Knicks watch party at Bryant Park. This comes after watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden were canceled due to Trump's attendance.

I can't help but wonder if this isn't the real reason most presidents don't go to sports games while in office. They know their presence is disruptive.

Plus, I bet the White House has great snacks.

u/shaveandahaircut 5h ago

Obama specifically said this is why he didn't go to NBA games

265

u/Capital_Past69 4h ago

I was at an NBA game Obama showed up to when he was President. He got there right when they were ready to tipoff but then they waited for him to be seated first.

188

u/devildog2067 3h ago

I think they can get away with that if his visit is unannounced and planned at the last minute, but not if it’s scheduled a ways out and people know about it.

173

u/goonSquad15 3h ago

Trump needs to make a spectacle of himself so he would never do this unannounced

47

u/carlpum1 2h ago

He sure made a spectacle of himself yesterday on MTP. 😂

21

u/_jump_yossarian 2h ago

Why the news network continue to do interviews with him is beyond me. His behavior is uber predictable.

5

u/normal_throwaway2016 58m ago

Because they know people will watch. Look at how many people are talking about Meet the Press today. We wouldn't be talking about the show if that hadn't happened.

7

u/arminghammerbacon_ 1h ago

I’m not religious, per se, but I swear the more he lied, the harder it rained. I don’t think he ended the interview as much as he fled the wrath of god.

I’ve never been to an NBA game, but do they have suites and boxes there? I was always under the impression that the “seats of honor” were courtside so I assumed that’s why the president wouldn’t go to game - because they’re relatively exposed.

102

u/porscheblack 4h ago

It's because the security measures become disruptive to everyone attending. They're telling people to arrive 2 hours early if they want to make tipoff.

17

u/hexcraft-nikk 2h ago

There was a ONE HOUR line for people who work at msg to get there and clock in.

11

u/porscheblack 2h ago

I had access to press passes to the NCAA wrestling tournament he went to a few years ago. The security directions were insane. One of my friends is a photographer and he was straight up told if he didn't leave his gear overnight, he wouldn't get through security the next day. He was so nervous leaving thousands of dollars worth of equipment behind and hopimg that nothing gets broken or stolen.

2

u/Helenium_autumnale 1h ago

Was his gear OK the next day? I'd be scared to leave photography equipment with people I don't know.

2

u/porscheblack 1h ago

Fortunately it was. The good thing is the credentialed press pool is usually pretty tight. Apparently they took sniffer dogs through the equipment and that was all so it wasn't handled.

9

u/canman7373 2h ago

They're telling people to arrive 2 hours early if they want to make tipoff.

Which I think the majority of fans would be doing anyways, but difference here is you arn't inside early you are waiting in security lines for hours which would suck, I'd have to bring a cheap lawnchair and toss it before entrance I guess. I cant stand more than 10 minutes with my back.

3

u/porscheblack 1h ago

It's also a totally different context. Under regular conditions they're concerned about you having knock off tickets but the staff are focused on getting people in as quickly as they can. But now? Security comes first and getting in is a very far off second or third priority.

When I saw Obama at an NBA game, he sat courtside front row

17

u/yeahright17 3h ago

I think Obama attended 2 games while President. One about a month into his first term when the Bulls came to DC and then the 2015 Bulls season opener. He sat courtside to both games.

6

u/Capital_Past69 3h ago

Yeah, this was the Bulls game in DC. I also saw him and Biden at like an Olympics tuneup game for the US in DC.

7

u/nerfherder998 1h ago

Big difference between Obama or Bush Jr sitting courtside versus Trump or Biden: if a ball goes sailing off the court at face level, two of those presidents could catch the ball and two of them would get their faces smashed on national TV.

3

u/hexcraft-nikk 2h ago

Obama didn't purposely tell everyone days in advance where he was going, and didn't actively have half the country wanting to blow his brains out. Sure he was the Fox News boogeyman but there weren't active public threats to his life happening every year.

4

u/Expendable_Red_Shirt 1h ago

and didn't actively have half the country wanting to blow his brains out.

I'm going to disagree with you there. Half the country did want to blow his brains out. But it wasn't for the same reasons.

It isn’t about being in a suite, it’s the fact they need to basically set up security days in advance block the surrounding area etc. but idk here in Canada and most other serious nations the PM can just sit in the stands. Wonder why?

9

u/Cmdr_Shiara 2h ago

Arsenal actually made Kier Starmer move from his regular season ticket seat to a box when he became prime minister because they couldn't guarantee his safety

38

u/modernlifeisbeatdown 5h ago

There are suites/boxes as well. It depends on the person which they prefer

3

u/ceecee_50 3h ago

I would love nothing more than Donald Trump to be at courtside and get his ass handed to him by the crowd, that's not gonna happen. Bitch is only coming to disrupt the fan base and the mayors enthusiastic celebrating. And making sure fans that can't go to the game can still celebrate, he's a good guy.

I would think MSG has boxes and private seating, they do here in Detroit.

Right, because it's not just the 30 seconds on the jumbotron. It's the additional venue security, the motorcade snarling traffic, etc.

He did go to a couple but they were regular season games for the Wizards. No playoff games and especially no finals games

u/ebonyseraphim 5h ago

Wonder? Basically any celebrity who isn’t super young and is fully aware knows this about their appearances. If they go, it better not be trivial because they are disrupting the show — and a sitting president is even more ridiculous. The dumbest or worst of modern day presidents would only go to a whatever baseball game.

47

u/SamuraiJono 4h ago

I remember reading that Eminem didn't physically go to his daughter's graduation, because he knew it would be disruptive and he didn't want to make it about himself. Iirc he basically watched a stream from somewhere else in the building or something along those lines.

8

u/ebonyseraphim 2h ago

Makes sense. He wanted his daughter to have a normal graduation ceremony and not have people make a big fuss over who her daddy is. Lebron James, any big celebrity parent, is a good example of someone who needs to make the opposite parental decision at times when it comes to showing up for their kids’ events. It’s one of the benefits of their kids generally going to exclusive private schools — perhaps there are other distractions around.

2

u/Rosebunse 45m ago

My orchestra teacher saw Bruce Willis once at a school concert. I guess their kids both attended the same college and shared a concert. Come to find out, Bruce Willis was known for having an entourage, but for his daughter's concert he left it very low-key to the point where there weren't any paparazzi pics of him there.

2

u/OnceMoreAndAgain 2h ago

My reason for not attending sporting events as a president would be the same reason Lincoln shouldn't have gone to the theater.

When I did HVAC, I did one job at the White House during trumps first term. He definitely liked gold for sure. When I went into certain people’s offices, on their little coffee tables, they all had some sort of wrapped gold packages of like peanut m&ms or some jelly beans or whatever. So yeah they did had a ton of candies lol

Makes perfect sense why Trump would go, because he’s a massive egotistical narcissist POS that wouldn’t give a micro-second of thought about disrupting EVERYTHING at the last minute just so his dumb can show up to a game he’ll probably fall asleep at.

It's a logistic clusterfuck for EVERYONE involved. Obama did famously attend a few games and I think the most notable was the Rays V The Cuban National team but he never even entertained a super bowl or finals appearance.

21

u/thegroovemonkey Green Bay Packers 5h ago

He’d have gone in 2011 if the Bears had beat the Packers in the NFCCG

10

u/pumpkinspruce 5h ago

I remember Michelle being at the gold medal basketball game in 2012, but I’m not sure of the logistics of that. Obama himself has been at several sporting events since he left office, including the Duke-UNC game where Zion’s shoe went kablooey.

13

u/Spideycloned Miami Marlins 5h ago

Yeah, she was part of the US Delegation to the 2012 games. I would say if Trump had gone to an Olympics it wouldn't have been out of sorts considering world leaders go there and the law enforcement presence there gets support from the world. Bush went to China for the Olympics, as an example.

I know Obama attended an Oregon State - Howard basketball game near Washington, D.C. Michelle's brother was the head coach of the Beavers at that point. That seems a little easier to manage than the NBA Finals.

3

Obama also made the hour or so trek to Towson to see Oregon State play there, in addition to a game at GW in DC itself.

3

u/TheWitchOfSomeWood 3h ago

There's a general that makes you pay for them apparently.

2

u/bamagurl06 3h ago

I read no President had ever attended a NBA game due to it being an indoor Arena and security is more difficult for them.

2

u/trashleybanks 3h ago

Great snacks like cold hamberders

2

u/Akovsky87 3h ago

It's also why they don't go to disaster zones immediately, and wait until everything has been stabilized.

2

u/KPR70 3h ago

Trump's gonna keep half the arena from getting to their seats on time and get booed on national TV. Let's go.

2

u/illicit_losses 2h ago

The president is supposed to pay for their personal food (food not used for a function) so I’m not sure how true the snack thing is albeit I could be totally wrong.

2

u/dlc741 1h ago

If you watch at the White House, your snacks include room temperature Quarter Pounders, soggy fries, and well done fajitas with ketchup.

“Great snacks”

2

u/millennialmonster755 1h ago

I worked an event where Michelle and Biden were talking, and Obama’s daughters and I think Joe’s grandkids were also low key in the crowd with secret service around. It was a fun concert with a ton of celebrities and musicians. The president himself decided to watch the concert/ event on TV apparently from one of the buildings that over looked the park. Who knows if he actually watched, but he did say no to going to a lot of “fun” events like that because his security requirements are so disruptive. There are a few interviews where him and Michelle talk about it. They thought it was just kind of rude to complicate a fun event for everyone else and steal the spot light. I’m pretty sure most presidents have given the same courtesy.

2

u/Rosebunse 43m ago

I remember when Michelle came to my high school! It was incredible, but there were so many guys in suits walking around the school that week. Just all these agents wandering the halls pointing stuff out. They ended up taking over the drama class since it was under the stage, but my drama teacher loved it since he was planning on voting for Obama. It was so neat.

I really don't understand the Trump team's play here. He's nearly universally hated in New York (Strike 1), and then because he's coming the watch parties get cancelled outside pissing everyone off (Strike 2). When you take the added hassle of the security logistics for those attending the game, you just look like more of an asshole (Strike 3).

  1. He's stealing attention. His whole game is dominating your mindshare, if it's about him good or bad he's still the one that's in control, dictating the terms of the incident. And he's doing it successfully here too. The only way to beat his soft power projection is to cut him out of your life (including any Left media that obsesses over him). Don't give him your attention.
  2. Pissing off the Left is the point. His supporters love that he's pissing off New Yorkers.

i know this sounds conspiratorial as all hell, but with james dolan being trump's buddy i can see him using this as a way to get profiles on a bunch of trump-haters during the game. which he can use to flag/ban those ppl from future MSG, Radio City Musical Hall, etc. events. pablo torre had an episode about dolan's crazy facial recognition surveillance state and he is petty as fuck, so while not likely it's still a non-zero chance

Attention whore needs attention. He does not care who he bothers. People who don't like him deserve whatever they get. The only people who matter are those who know his genius.

You can't lose when all that matters is you being the focus, and when sycophants will defend you no matter what.

9

u/RogueOneWasOkay 4h ago

He doesn't give a shit if his actions are an inconvenience to anyone because he can't think of anyone but himself. If anything, seeing democrat voters pissed off brings him joy. He can't stand the idea that The Knicks and NYC are in the spotlight and getting attention without him there. If they win the series he will likely claim it was because he graced game three with his presence. He is a narcissist beyond comprehension from any normal empathetic person.

2

u/_violet_skies_ 2h ago

I don’t feel bad for Trump at all, but man, what a miserable way to live. Constantly seeking attention and validation, always feeling like a victim, mainly finding joy in upsetting people.

2

u/PattyCakes216 2h ago

Trump’s lifelong quest for attention is simply pathetic. He is thrilled to settle for negative attention as that’s about all the world has left to give him.

Somehow, I doubt he was his mothers’ favorite child.

I'm pretty sure Trump does not think he's hated as much as he really is. He only surrounds himself with sycophants.

7

u/BohunkFunk 3h ago

Not to mention they're blocking off that section of midtown, 1) ignore how you vet an area where over 500,000 people visit any given weekday 2) you're inconviencing new yorkers on their way home and 3) you're stopping the celebratory block parties which have been a staple of the Knicks game after each of the last 13 straight wins. That's where all these videos on social media come from.

This is just really bad optics, and if their 13 game win streak is broken, the fans will blame Trump for that as a joke/bit. It'll just make him even more universally hated in NYC. Even before we discuss his callous comment about the price of tickets and shunning other New Yorkers from taking part in watching the game at watch parties.

5

u/ebonyseraphim 5h ago

He’s going for some image points. He wants to generate headlines where he seems important and lord over all. Whatever his comments are about the game needs to preside over all other sportscasters, and he wants to see if the players might be deferential towards him. I hope to goodness the players don’t have to deal with a forced interaction with that guy — most of them don’t want it except for one Knick I believe.

3

u/Galle_ 3h ago

Looking like an asshole is the goal. MAGA don't have any coherent ideology or values of their own, they're just edgelords.

3

u/ZiggyDole 3h ago

I think this is a play for another fake assassination attempt. He'll blame Mamdani.

3

u/yotothyo 2h ago

Forcing himself on people who don't want him is his entire MO. To him it's a power move. The more you don't want him the harder he will push to do what he wants.

As an added bonus, he craves attention more than anything else. Even if it's negative. He can't stand the Knicks being in the headlines without him being associated in some way.

2

u/hiberniagermania 4h ago

Strike 1: he doesn’t care / his handlers likely say he’s beloved

When you treat public service as public service and not a business

26

u/HalfInchHollow 4h ago

Fuck Donald Trump

8

u/JohnStamosAsABear 2h ago

I thought it was too dangerous for him to go out in public. I’m surprised he’s not demanding that this game should be played in his ballroom.

Small reminder that Donald Trump literally destroys everything he touches.

2

u/rtduvall 38m ago

Destroys it in ways the likes you've never seen.

19

u/Sky-Soldier0430 5h ago

I’m wondering if ABC will be able to limit the volume of the crowd for tv viewers when they boo the shit out of him.

10

u/Any_Cicada623 2h ago

They'll overlay it with cheers

This is what actual leadership looks like.

8

u/jrblockquote 4h ago

Props to Mamdani. Dude is killing it.

8

u/FFAbutnotFA 4h ago

The fact that the owner of the Knicks personally invited little d to the game is enough for me to root against them.

Super fucking jealous that I don’t live in NYC right now. The vibes just seem incredible.

10

u/teachme65 3h ago

Fuck Trump

60

u/TheUnseenTomato 5h ago

There are quite a few factors that make me root for the Knicks in these Finals; Mamdani is certainly one of the biggest. This man is such a breath of fresh air given what we're used to in recent times

5

u/automatic_shark Pittsburgh Penguins 3h ago

and Danhausen is the second biggest, right?

11

u/CoconutBangerzBaller 5h ago

The parties outside of people screaming "Mo Bamba" and marching down the street got me rooting for them. But Mamdani is a close 2nd!

3

u/clam-caravan 50m ago

They better let Mamdani on that parade float if they win the championship

25

u/Andovars_Ghost 5h ago

You know, I love NYC, but REALLY hate snow. Maybe I might try to get over that just to experience what it’s like to have a mayor who ACTUALLY gives a shit AND does something about it.

We need more like Mamdani

2

u/Helenium_autumnale 1h ago

Talarico seems cut from a similar cloth. They have some traits that don't overlap, but their intellect, quick-wittedness, and genuine caring seem to be similar, at least to me.

This guy for president!!

5

u/BishopGodDamnYou 2h ago

I really really really hope they don’t censor out the booing

3

u/chephin 2h ago

I’m sure they will or try but those who are in the arena will be recording their side of the story

2

u/BigBoyYuyuh 1h ago

They will. Social media though…

6

u/ALexGOREgeous 1h ago

So many grifters are stating how much money it would cost to host a "free watch party" but fail to mention how much it costs for Don T to watch a finals game at MSG

That feeling when he just gets you.

6

u/indyxetan 5h ago

Trying to convince my wife to move to NYC now.

6

u/Extension-While7536 4h ago

Smart.  They already are used to coordinating big screen events because of the summer movie fests there anyway which are usually also on Monday nights.

5

u/CharlieBravo74 3h ago

Trump, once again, ruining everything he touches for his own selfish desires.

He just can't let anyone enjoy anything if he thinks a camera and a large audience will be involved. Good for Mamdani for doing the right thing to help counter Trump doing the wrong thing.

6

u/cheetaratops 3h ago

MAN OF THE PEOPLE

5

u/rtduvall 2h ago

I can’t afford it but I want to live in a city with a human mayor.

2

u/clam-caravan 48m ago

We can all just live vicariously through the New Yorkers. They are living their best lives right now.

2

u/rtduvall 44m ago

Yes, we can and will.

Except for the ones wanting to watch the game outside the arena, the fans with tickets needing to be there hours before and shutting down a big chunk of that area's streets. But now that I think about it, I would still be ok knowing Mamdani was my mayor.

Go Knicks.

6

u/Demonofthedark1313 1h ago

Trump destroys, Mamdani creates.

9

u/schuey_08 4h ago

This guy really knows how to politic.

4

u/oneeyedman72 4h ago

I love Bryant Park, my favourite oasis in NYC

3

u/TheMoorNextDoor 3h ago

Most influential NY mayor since Bloomberg & La Guardia?

4

u/FidelCastroll 3h ago

He fucks up everything that he gets near.

3

u/AvengingBlowfish 2h ago

Camera operators and program directors if you're listening... we need to put Trump on the jumbotron tonight to hear the boos and then immediately cut to Mamdani to hear the boos change to cheers....

u/Turtledonuts 2h ago

If the Knicks lose, everyone will blame trump and trump will never poll above 1% in NYC again.

5

u/samus252 1h ago

Hey Trump, Knicks are up by 13. Isn't that how old she was?

5

u/onlythetoast 3h ago

Die hard Spurs fan here, but there's no other team I'd rather go up against than the Knicks. The people of that city have renewed my faith in humanity while embracing Mamdani as their mayor.

6

u/owlbynight 1h ago

Mamdani seems to have discovered a new political strategy, wherein you provide services to people that make happy in an effort to garner their favor. We'll see how it goes.

3

u/party_mcfly1313 1h ago

Bold strategy Cotton!

3

u/Ocean898 5h ago

Dude knows what he’s doing.

3

u/Trajinous 4h ago

Hell yeah

3

u/CryptographerLow6772 3h ago

Man of the people!

3

u/JAMONLEE 3h ago

Why does New York need to abide by this? Tell him you won’t accommodate him and say the rest isn’t your problem

3

u/Most-Artichoke6184 3h ago

“This is communism!“, Says Gomer P turd from Biloxi, Mississippi.

3

u/dmisfit21 Atlanta Braves 2h ago

For the Knicks fans that will be there tonight, do your thing people. This is the heckling moment yall were born for!

3

u/mortgageletdown 2h ago

Can somebody just tell Diaper Donald to stay home?

3

u/ForanAffairs 2h ago

Can never get enough of Mamdani swooping into to scoop up the bullshit that the Trump Admin dump on NYC!

3

u/Mack_Daddy_1 47m ago

Make sure there are watch parties blocking every road from MSG to Airforce One and no path to a helicopter pad either. Make him wait to go home.

2

u/MenaFWM 21m ago

I doubt New Yorkers want to prolong his stay there

8

u/oklolzzzzs 5h ago

good on mamdani

2

u/Chaminade64 4h ago

What is he going to do with the other 45,000 people?

2

u/ganslooker 2h ago

Good on the mayor !! 47 is a selfish prick.

2

u/Available_Age7592 1h ago

How about cancel Trump.

2

u/poestavern 1h ago

A great Mayor and human being!! 👍👍👍👍

7

u/leedo8 5h ago
